Picasso, I Like ItMarch 15, 2024Hey friend, Recently there have been people who would ask me questions like, “How do I get my name out there?” or how can someone get their work noticed by the right people? When I set out on my current content creation journey I had one goal in mind, and that was to get more people to see my work that I enjoyed making. I had no expectations outside of that. With how social media works it’s you fighting for everyone’s attention amongst hundreds of thousands of other creatives trying to do the same thing. To get more people to see you or your work, you need to be consistent and outlast the rest. What does this mean? This means that you need to show up on a regular cadence. That could range from posting 3 times a week to 14 times a week. What’s crazy is I post 14 times a week. 2 times per day, 1 Reel and 1 Carousel. I do this across all platforms (with the exception YouTube Shorts doesn’t support image posts). TikTok and YouTube have not had anywhere near the same success as Instagram has. If I didn’t have some big goals that involve those two platforms I would have dropped them and only focus on Instagram. Now how does this translate to the questions above? Me personally I believe a lot of people, including myself, hold back on showing their work. We get caught up in thinking that it’s not good enough for other people to see it. As a photographer you could have 1,000 images from a particular event, edit 200 of them but maybe only post 5 of them. What does this mean to you? I love the example of Picasso, we all know him. He’s well known for I believe 7 paintings that he did. Did he only paint 7 paintings and every one of them be amazing? Spoiler alert, no. Picasso painted 13,500 paintings during his lifetime and is only known for 7 of them. But what did he do? He kept putting his work out there and eventually it captivated the right audience and eventually the entire world knew him. How do we translate that to today? Posting your work online is the simplest and easiest way. We are given a great medium of showcasing our work. Yes, having to utilize Reels on Instagram is annoying because it’s originally a photo app, but you have to look at this as a business that needs to adapt to the changing environment. If you cannot change with it, it’s going to leave you behind. Consistently showing up and posting on a regular cadence no matter how you feel about your work is going to get you out there more. More people than you think will like your work and eventually the right person will find you. I grew my Instagram following from 390 people to 100,000 people in 7 months. I post twice a day every day without any breaks. Is it easy? No. Is it fun? Yes. Lastly, being consistent and loving your work will eventually attract the right opportunities. No one else knows this but I’ve started a relationship with one of my favorite brands for camera gear. They’ve sent me free product once and they are doing it again. A relationship like this starting can lead to paid opportunity, and one of my goals is to be able to break away from my corporate job. I won’t go into detail on who it is or what it is, because there isn’t anything official. We are just testing the waters to see if it’s a good fit. I want to ensure that what I promote is something I believe in and they need to make sure I’m the right person for their brand image. Anyways. I hope this has helped give you some clarity or inspiration to show your work more. I believe everyone deserves some level of recognition for their work. I see some creatives who I personally think they are far better than me and if they were to show up more consistently I’m confident they’d reach new heights. See you next week!
