Do the Damn Thing

Get It Done

February 2, 2024

I describe myself as a “do-er” and so does my wife. When I see something that needs to be done, should be done or I want to do, I don’t like waiting to get it done. I’d rather execute on the action that needs completion and move on. This helps me with keeping up on things like cleaning around the house, maintenance on the cars, fixing the leaking sink, etc. so that it doesn’t all pile up on us at once.

I probably do the majority of certain things between the two of us because I’d rather just get it done and not worry about it. My wife does things I don’t want to do and I do things she doesn’t want to do, so it equals out very nicely.

If I don’t execute on something in a timely manner I beat myself up over it. Like building our new fence around our recently-built garage. It was getting colder outside making it hard to do so I had to do it in phases.

Posts first, let them cure for a lot longer than normal because of the cold, then build the rest of it. It took me 2 weekends over the span of 3 weeks. That bothered me a lot. I then built a garden shed soon after because I wanted it done before the weather really hit. I built it over a weekend, in the cold and rain. All of Christmas week I took off work just to get things finished.

By the way, it was my first time building a fence. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing but I watched tutorials and read instructions. This fence is 100x better than our old one.

Recently, I had another creator mention to me that they have been wanting to do the same thing I’m doing, the POV reels for photography. I got my inspiration from the same person as them, Lifethroughoptics (aka Ben). I didn’t start doing POV reels until almost a year after I discovered Ben’s content. I wasn’t hard pressed to do it at first and I dabbled it in once or twice with not a lot of luck.

When I finally put the GoPro on my head and hit the record button it wasn’t because I was planning to. I just did it… without any thought or shame for waiting this long. I went ahead and executed a strategy that I’ve seen someone else do and as I’ve been doing it I put my own twist on it because I have my own style. That’s been going on for almost 6 months.

Now, back to the other creator who also had inspiration from the same person. They’ve mentioned to me before they have been wanting to do it. I’ve been telling them that they should go do it, encouraging them.

“Oh, I don’t have a GoPro” Okay, use your phone. I only had a GoPro readily available because I bought it for the hikes we did on our honeymoon. If I didn’t have it, I’d use my phone. “Well my camera isn’t the best, like yours” And? Use what you have. Instagram doesn’t care if your camera has 24 or 33 megapixels. It looks the same. 24 is the industry standard and gets the job done.

It’s easy for someone else to look at what I’ve accomplished and think, “Oh dang, that’s awesome you did that. You really executed on something I’ve wanted to do.”

Then go do it…

See, no one took two seconds to look at me when I was starting out in photography over 6 years ago. No one cared to know my name or what I’m capable of until I grew to thousands of followers on social media, which means absolutely nothing at the end of the day. That’s a conversation for later.

Now those who ignored me are reaching out to me saying they want to do the same thing and I always tell people to just go and do the damn thing. It’s fun, for me. If it’s fun for me it could be fun for you, but you won’t know until you try it.

See something you need to get done or want to do? Just execute… Simple as that.

I do want to note I do not hate it when people reach out to me, I thoroughly enjoy good conversations. I don’t want people to limit themselves because they think they need a certain piece of gear or level of knowledge to do what I do. I barely know what the f*** I’m doing. I’m just out here doing my best and having fun. That’s all.

We get so hyper-focused on certain things like “I need to be at this level to be good” or “I need this piece of gear to really make the difference” No… You just need to go with what you have. Your skill and process will improve over time.

Gear is a tool, not the means to your success.

I will speak to what “success” is defined as, for me, in another post. But for now my advice would be to be a “do-er” of things. You feel better when you get stuff done. (I wasn’t gonna say executioner. That would give me some GOT vibes)

See you next week!
